I have commented before on the practice of some judges of imposing
unorthodox, unusual or "creative" punishment, in lieu of applying the
law, including the recent case where a judge sentenced a young man to going to church. See

First Amendment Center arguing that sentencing someone to go to church violates the First Amendment.
